El Mexico Cafe Review

El Mexico Cafe

Every year, the Wichita Eagle hosts a “Best of” voting. It’s where readers can submit their favorite in many different food and restaurant categories. Recently El Mexico Cafe has scored high and sometimes won best burrito. I questioned this and had to find out for myself if I agreed.

When you arrive, you’re given complimentary chips and salsa. It was alright but very runny if you’re into that sort of salsa. I don’t mind it if there’s some kick to it but compared to others in town, I found their salsa to be about average with their chips being a little on the stale side.

For dinner, I went with their popular deluxe burrito to see what the hype was all about along with a bowl of their rice. One things for certain, the burrito was a good size. After the first few bites, I was already let down. I tried not to let the hype get to me but it was just very underwhelming. The chili tasted like it came out of a can and the tortilla lacked that soft texture I really love in burritos.

People are welcome to vote however they like. Obviously El Mexico Cafe is doing something right to get the accolades they’ve received over the years. But in my personal opinion, there’s so much better in town to choose from.

Here’s their menu.

  1. I have been a patron since 1977 and the food has not changed, it is still awesome to eat at El Mexico. The restaurant itself has undergone a new facelift and was a surprise for me to see the great changes that have been made to improve the dining experience. The place looks fabulous and the food is still the BEST in town. I will be back for more!
