Saigon Oriental Restaurant: Home of some ridiculously good eggrolls

Saigon

I’ve been on a trek around Wichita in the latter half of the year sampling and trying all the pho my body can handle. While on this ‘Wichita Pho Tour’ of sorts, one visit brought me to Saigon Oriental Restaurant. Since I don’t regularly visit the same restaurants multiple times, it’s been years since my last stop here.

Walking inside the restaurant reminded me of going to my aunt’s house when she was alive. There was just stuff everywhere with no rhyme or reason. In a weird way, it felt kind of like eating at her house.

The menu which you can find at the end is massive. There is so much to choose from. You may spend more time perusing through the men than actually eating your food. They have so many different Vietnamese and Chinese dishes to choose from. For our visit, we stuck with my favorite, the Vietnamese side of the menu.

We started off with an order of eggrolls. Having been raised on eggrolls, it’s rare I’ll ever order them or even like them. My standards for eggrolls are very high and nearly impossible to reach but Saigon shocked the hell out of me. I loved them as did my girlfriend; finally an eggroll with a thin crunchy exterior and packed with substance. I’m so tired of the big thick eggrolls are are 70% shell and 30% filling. They were close to what my aunt used to make but bigger. I was highly impressed and they currently sit in my personal ranking as the best I’ve had in town at a restaurant.

For lunch, we ordered the #24 sliced beef pho and the #45 Bun with char-broiled pork, vegetables and (why not) eggrolls. The #45 was phenomenal, the char-broiled pork had a nice smokey flavor to them with a small hint of spice to it. Once mixed in with the noodles, vegetables and fish sauce, it was a meal I couldn’t stop eating. At one point I contemplated taking half of it home for leftovers but my stomach wouldn’t let me stop eating. Meanwhile the pho was good. We wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s the best or close to the best in town but it was satisfying enough to give us a pleasant experience.

Our service was great with refills constantly taking place. Only hiccup was the long time it took to get our ticket but outside of that, we left as two happy customers.

I also want to thank my fortune cookie for being so kind!
