Shopping in the ice cream aisle, you may notice a special section of name brand ice cream featuring some of your favorite snacks. We decided to try two different ones: Rolo and Hostess Twinkies ice cream to see what we thought and whether they were worth it.
We’ve seen these 1.5qt tubs at Target, Dillon’s and Wal-mart. Right now the cheapest we’ve seen these for was $3.49 at Wal-Mart. At Dillon’s each container runs $4.99 and I haven’t been able to confirm the price at Target yet.
Let’s start with the Twinkies. I grew up loving Twinkies and would spend many of my lunches solely on them.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the ice cream version but to quote Panic! at the Disco, “Had to have high, high hopes for a living”. Anything with Twinkies had to be good, right?
Well the very first bite in, it tasted like butterscotch. After more bites, it was like a mix between butterscotch and buttercream frosting. Sweet was certainly the overshadowing flavor. I’m not sure any of us would have correlated Twinkies had we done a blind taste test on the ice cream. I’ll admit, it did kind of grow on me but it’s not something you could probably have lots of unless you could get over how sweet it was.
Would I purchase it again? Probably not. The first time was more cause of my nostalgia for it.
Next up was the Rolo ice cream.
This was a bigger disappointment. It’s advertised as vanilla light ice cream with caramel swirl and mini Rolo candy pieces. Upon opening the container, it was mostly vanilla light ice cream. The ratio of candy pieces and caramel swirl to vanilla was very low. The container was very misleading. Every now and then you would get a hint of Rolo flavoring but that was far and few between.
Both of these were a pass for us. On to the next random grocery store aisle find……
