Anytime I am on a road trip, I like to plan a visit to a nearby restaurant located just outside of the city. While driving back from Oklahoma, we made a quick detour to Shindigs Bar & Grill in Winfield, KS which is a little less than an hour from town. It has long been on my list of small-town dining destinations I’ve been wanting to cross off.

I had no idea what to expect on my visit. It was my first time in Winfield, KS and not once had I read a review or looked at pictures of Shindigs. It was completely new to me and at first glance, I was very impressed at what they did with the building. It’s a railroad freight station turned into a bar and grill. Our eyes lit up when we stepped inside and started looking around. It is not what I had expected in a city like Winfield. We loved the use of old industrial parts turned into ambiance like the truck turned into a beer dispenser.
Even the bathrooms were top notch. Keg shells turned into urinals were brilliant. I contemplated peeing for hours.
It reminded me of Stearman but on steroids.
When it was time to order some food, we started with deviled eggs as appetizers and then chicken frizzled steak and a burger for our main entrees. It didn’t take long to receive our food at all.
This is when things started to go a bit downhill. The deviled eggs were very mushy. The menu said there was jalapeno relish which we didn’t get much of a hint of. When you picked up a deviled egg, you had to quickly eat it or the insides would come pouring out. The chicken frizzled steak was a very good sized portion. It wasn’t that tough or chewy but the cream gravy really brought it down a notch. My girlfriend noted it tasted like flour; that’s all you could taste in each bite. As for the burger, it was OK at best. There wasn’t much to really separate it from others. Honestly it felt like your typical bar food. The fries were our favorite though; nice and crispy, just the way we like it.
Given how impressed we were with Shindigs from a visual standpoint, we really wanted to like the food but couldn’t bring ourselves to. It really was your typical standard bar fare…. at least in our opinion. Could this be a place you spend an entire day drinking and watching games? Absolutely. For the ambiance alone, this place gets five stars, two thumbs up, or whatever your rating scale is. And perhaps that is the big allure of Shindigs and what keeps people coming because at the end of the day, we all could use a place to hang out at.
Here’s their lunch menu:

We were there yesterday and I’ll let you know their eggs have improved!! My husband had the meatloaf and I had the pulled pork sandwich. Oh yeah. And fried okra. All was great but the eggs were my favorites!!!
The thing about Shindigs is that is a place to go for dinner, not lunch. The vibe is even better at night. The steak and pasta are good.
