Taco Johns fails to impress…. not that expectations were high

I decided to make my way to Derby and start knocking off places I’ve never been to before. Once of those restaurants was Taco John’s, a national chain from Wyoming founded in 1968. The franchise arrived in Derby, KS back in 2017. There are quite few locations throughout Kansas, most popular in Lawrence and Manhattan. Other close ones are in El Dorado and Hutchinson with one supposedly arriving in Wichita soon.

My brother went a while ago and had the shrimp street tacos, potato oles and cheese sauce. He noted that while the tacos weren’t anything special, it was all still pretty decent for a fast food taco place.

I knew what I was getting myself into on this visit. I had expectations of a place like Taco Pronto, Taco Bell, Taco Tico, you name it. My feelings would be it would be a place with low-grade meat, below average salsa options and to nobody’s surprise that was exactly what I received.

Before the naysayers come in and say, “Well what did you expect.”. I’m no stranger to fast food taco places and am not afraid to admit my occasional love for these types of establishments. I understand I’m not going to get a high quality meal but I’d at least like something with a little flavor. The tacos were very boring with the burritos perhaps being worse.

Would I enjoy these more if I were a drunk KU or K-State student living up north? Perhaps but I am far past that stage of my life.

I’m a sauce guy and all of the options were very uninspiring and bland.

My brother may have sold me a little too much on Taco John’s or maybe even all the past stories I’ve heard of people going there. For me, I walked away extremely unimpressed and will stick to the competition.
