On a cold day, sometimes you just need soup. There’s probably not a more popular place for soup in Wichita than Tanya’s Soup Kitchen. I met up with an old friend for lunch and once again enjoyed one of the best meals in town.

At Tanya’s many of their soup options change on a daily basis. You can also see what soups they have by following them on their Facebook page.
One gentleman at our table ordered a salad while another friend went with the Maine shrimp chowder with the Grandpa Rubie sandwich which was a reuben divine, corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing on a toasted marble rye.
I couldn’t decide between the four soup options, so I went with the flight of soups. Not everybody is aware that this is an option. You can get a mini flight of all the soups, similar to what breweries do with their beer. It’s great for those people who can’t decide like myself. To supplement the soups, I also ordered a side of pasta salad.
My meal was fabulous. Of the four soups, I loved the chowder and the North African pumpkin stew. I may be biased because of my love of pumpkins, but it was absolutely wonderful. It had a nice thick texture with a wonderful pumpkin flavor that wasn’t too sweet. The tomato curry with jasmine rice was also a bit hit with my taste buds. I could have easily ordered four big bowls of each of the soups and spent all afternoon there.
My friend also loved his meal, noting that you could really notice the delightful fresh ingredients in the chowder and it wasn’t too heavy of a soup, which some chowders can be. He also enjoyed his Rubie but said it could have used a little more meat to balance the bread as it was a little light on the protein.
One thing to note is throughout all of my visits to Tanya’s, the one constant has been the service. Everybody there has been incredibly kind and sweet from my first visit there to my most recent.
Also, the place gets VERY busy during the colder weather. The line was out the door when I stopped by for lunch, so that’s something to keep in mind. But the service is pretty quick, so it moves at a good pace.
Overall, I just love me some Tanya’s Soup Kitchen.
