When it comes to most frequented restaurants, one of my top ten places is Japan Express. They are a small little family-owned Japanese restaurant at the northeast corner of 21st and Rock Road. I’ve been going there for as long as I can remember. The restaurant has it all going for them: affordable prices, such incredibly friendly people and delicious food. For some people, that’s the holy trinity of dining out.

It’s no secret I’ve been to many restaurants around town. The difference between Japan Express and all the hundreds of other places in town is I’ve finally completed the entire menu at Japan Express. And I’m referring to menus that are significant in size, not your 3-8 item menus. It wasn’t anything I set out to do. I just noticed over time that I had tried 80% of the menu and decided to go for the rest of it. Over time I went in one day and realized, “Oh shit…. there’s nothing new left for me to try!”
Since it’s a question I’ll get, I figured I’ll just answer it now:
“What’s your favorite thing to get there?”
Narrowing it down to just one is tough because essentially the entire menu is wonderful. But if I had to choose some, the teriyaki chicken is the safest bet for first timers and those hesitant to really venture out. It’s delicious and really filling.
My personal favorites though include the Tonkatsu Chicken or Katsudon Chicken, the yakisoba noodles are also amazing, as is the momoyaki. No visit is complete without a small $1.50 bowl of their hot & sour soup or miso. Sometimes I’ll get the obento or pork chops. OK I should stop because I could easily keep going and before I know it, I’ll have named everything on the menu.
Here are some pics I’ve snapped over the past six months.

Seriously though, if you’ve never been to Japan Express I urge you to give them just one try. I get that everybody has different food preferences and not everybody likes the same thing but this is really one restaurant I feel like everyone could get on board with if they find that one menu item they love.
Here is their menu (for a better view check out their web page):

My son and DIL will be coming to Wichita in December. It has been 4 years since my son has been back. They are both in the Navy and have lived in Japan, Hawaii and now San Diego. I would love to impress them with something new and exciting here in Dooda. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
