Jimmie’s Diner Review

It’s been my goal to start branching out to other breakfast places in Wichita that don’t get as much publicity as the others. At the same time, it’s been a little daddy/daughter bonding time. Now that she’s at the age where she’s eating non-baby food, I wanted to start taking her with me to more reviews. The latest stop brought me to Jimmie’s Diner.

While their north Rock Road location is the more well known of the two, I wanted to visit their south side location. It’s in the former Toc’s Coffeehouse space.

Jimmie’s Diner is a restaurant I’ve been to possibly a hundred times. While at Wichita State, it was a common stop for many of us. It’s been many years since I last ate at Jimmie’s so this was a huge refresher for me.

To start out morning, we went with the eggs Benedict along with a small scrambled egg for my daughter.

I loved my poached eggs and the Hollandaise sauce that accompanied it. It was rich, creamy and had a lemony buttery taste to it. The hash browns came with a nice crispy layer over the top; just the way I like it.

The most upsetting part though about my meal was the English muffin sitting underneath. It was nearly rock-hard and almost impossible to cut through. I wasn’t really able to take a single bite of it. Our server asked us multiple times how things were going and I eventually brought it up to her with the caveat I just wanted to give her a heads up and to not worry about it. She apologized and that was it.

As for the single scrambled egg, my daughter loved it but then again everything has been a major step up over Gerber baby food for the one-year-old.

Feeling a bit hungry still, we decided to order some dessert. Our first choice of a fried peach sundae was out so our back up was apple pie with caramel and ice cream.

It was dreamy good. I’m not sure if that’s even a proper way to describe food but I’m going with it. The pie came up nice and warm. I started eating it by myself until my daughter starting grunting and suffering from a case of FOMO (fear of missing out). I hesitantly gave her a bite and next thing I know she was yelling for more. If anybody happened to be at the restaurant at the same time, I apologize. She’s had some desserts here and there but this was her first experience with apple pie and she’s definitely a fan.

We wanted to pay it forward and ordered some sundaes for a father/son duo that happened to be dining near our table. We left before they received the order, so I wasn’t able to randomly walk up to the table and ask for a picture. Then again it would have been weird to ask for it in the first place.

Our server did an amazing job throughout our visit. It felt like she was the only server aside from a manager of sorts working that morning so kudos to her for holding the fort down with all the customers. Upon receiving our ticket, they discounted part of the meal because of the English muffin ordeal which was nice.

Otherwise, aside from the English muffin, it was a good little visit to Jimmie’s Diner that brought back some memories from the years and years worth of past stops I’ve made there.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
