Let’s Review Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers!

Let’s review Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers!

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is a fast-casual restaurant chain that was founded right here in Wichita, KS back in 2002. Since then the restaurant popular for its steakburgers, fries and frozen custard and blown up to over 300 locations.

There are multiple locations throughout the Wichita area. I have many memories of visiting both the Rock Road & Central and the 21st & Tyler locations long ago when they were two of the earlier ones to pop up in town. They even have a food truck that roams around town.

Throughout our multiple visits, we’ve ordered so many items across their menu. We’ve had their steakburgers, fries, hot dogs, and custard.

So what is it about the steakburgers that has appealed the masses? They consist of lean beef patties that are ultra-thin and grill-smashed, meaning a big surface area of beefy and tasty crust in between a buttery toasted bun. It’s not a big thick juicy burger. In fact, it’s the exact opposite yet done extremely well and consistent across many locations. I see many chains where the burgers are vastly inconsistent and that’s not the case here.

If burgers aren’t the draw, then possibly the biggest difference maker is the fries. In my opinion, these shoestring fries are one of the best in the industry. Eat them fast though, they don’t hold up well for a long time. They are just the right balance of firm and crispy and great to grab in handfuls to stuff your face with. If you want to take it to the next level, get the fry sauce or the spicy jalapeño fry sauce. It’s a mayonnaise and ketchup based sauce with their awesome seasoning. If you want to take to an even further level, add in their fry seasoning and you have the holy trinity of fries/condiment greatness. Fries + Fry Sauce + Seasoning. Hallelujah!

If you’re a simpleton and don’t need the extras, it doesn’t get better than bag fries. I don’t understand the science behind it but the transformation a fry has the moment they fall out of a container and into the paper bag is special. They become 10x better.

As for the hot dogs, it’s usually lower on the totem pole for our orders. My family though loves their hot dogs with cheese sauce smothered over the top. On the other hand, their Chicago dogs leave something to be desired.

And to round it out, a stop to Freddy’s is never complete without some frozen custard. You have to get at least one frozen treat while you’re there.

Aside from the food, many people like to support Freddy’s Frozen Custard here compared t other chains because of the local pride of it being a Wichita thing. It goes beyond that for me for three reasons: consistency, cleanliness, and friendliness. It really is a model for how chains should be handled.
