Restaurante Usuluteco Revisited

Let’s talk about Salvadoran food. It’s one of my favorite dishes around town and one I think gets undervalued in the Wichita food community. There are some great options around town, and one of the bigger players in that space is Restaurante Usuluteco. When I say bigger players, it’s really the biggest and most widely known stop for Salvadoran food.

Keep in mind before visiting any Salvadoran restaurant, that it does take some time. Pupusas are made to order and aren’t sitting around all day waiting for people to buy them. That alone can be a timely process, so it’s something to remember on any visit.

This is one of our favorite restaurants and a spot we revisit multiple times a year.

What’s good there? The pupusas are always the best bet. There are various pupusas to choose from. The minimum order is three, so always order a variety. There’s a revuelta which is our favorite and includes ground pork mixed with cheese. The con todo is the same but with beans added. There’s also the smoked ghost pepper if you want a bit of heat.

The pupusas come with a mild and hot sauce. The mild is very safe for any palate, but the hot really brings on the fire. I love it and often times find myself sweating like crazy. When it comes to the pickled cabbage, Usuluteco reigns supreme there.

I wanted to try something different one time and ordered the Sopa de camarones which was essentially shrimp swimming in broth. Be careful, the bowl was ridiculously big and too much soup for one person. And that’s saying a lot because I feel like I could eat gallons. But then again, I often order with my eyes and not with my true appetite. Regardless, it was still tasty. If you’re bothered by a fishy aftertaste, this may not be for you, though.

What else is there to say? The people there are wonderful and always have been, even when they were at their former location. It’s one of the restaurants on the ICT 100, best restaurants list. Give this a try if you haven’t ever been before.
