First Look at Tacos El Rey

Earlier this summer a new Mexican restaurant opened in the former Birrieria La Nieta De Villa space (which literally moved next door to a larger space). As with any new place, I tried to scurry out there as quick as I could to get a first-hand look at what you can expect on your first visit.

We dropped in for a quick daddy/daughter lunch. Nothing says “I love you” like tacos, right?

On our visit, we ordered a handful of tacos ranging from tripa, asada, buche, lengua and al pastor. We also had a side of rice.

A complimentary plate of cucumbers were given to us right after ordering.

Knowing my daughter was with me, they dropped off the rice next and said the tacos were on their way. The rice was great; wasn’t dry and cooked just right. If a restaurant messes up rice, I figure it’s best to just walk out the door. Tacos El Rey did not fail me here.

Soon after, the tacos arrived. The tortillas were freshly grilled and I needed a few minutes to let them cool down. There was a wonderful aroma to them. My daughter just sat there awaiting my next move anxious to see if she would be allowed to get down on some tacos. And did she ever.

Of all the meats, the asada was my favorite. It was well-seasoned and very tender. Sometimes I get asada at similar restaurants and it’s like I’m eating chopped up pebbles. It was fantastic at Tacos El Rey. Next up was the pastor and buche which were also delicious. Of all the meats, the tripa was probably my least favorite; a little too fatty and pungent for me.

All in all, we had a nice visit to Tacos El Rey. There were two ladies working that afternoon who were incredibly sweet and welcoming. It’s definitely worth a try to all the tacos lovers out there who are all about venturing around town on the hunt for all of Wichita’s taco options.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
