McDonald’s Spicy Chicken McNuggets have hit the Wichita market

Since 1983, the McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets have been a mainstay on the menu. The original recipe has relatively been the same especially on the flavor side. 37 years of McNuggets and now the most significant change has arrived: Spicy Chicken McNuggets.

They have hit nationally as of Wednesday, and I was able to get a sneak peek before the Wichita unveiling. How did they stack up? Let’s find out.

I received a box of twenty Spicy Chicken McNuggets since ordering anything less than twenty is unacceptable.

On top of that, I went with three of my favorite sauces hot mustard, tangy BBQ, sweet N sour along with the mighty hot sauce per their recommendation.

The first thing I noticed is that these nuggets had a reddish-hue to them and were slightly sturdier and crunchier than the plain McNugget. The fried coating had a bit of cayenne and chili pepper seasoning that gave it a very subtle spicy kick that likely would be OK for anyone’s pain tolerance. Basically, it’s the perfect heat level for a national chain like McDonald’s that wants to draw in every customer without turning away people with low heat tolerances.

Personally, I’m a fan of their McNuggets and sometimes order them and eat the entire box during the course of a weekend afternoon of watching football. With that, I had to give these a try.

I gave everybody in the house the McNuggets, and they all noted there was a slight bit of heat to it but nothing that was too much. In each of the sauces, the new Mighty Hot Sauce gave it probably ten times more bite. It was too much for those with low heat tolerances. While I love heat, I felt it was too much on the red pepper flavoring. The other sauces seemed to work better and gave the McNuggets a good balance.

The Big Question

Everybody maybe wondering one of two things

  • How do they compare to Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Nuggets?
  • How do they compare to the regular McDonald’s McNuggets?

For spicy purists, Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Nuggets offer a bit more kick to their nuggets. McDonald’s played it a bit safer on their recipe. But on the texture side, Wendy’s has been a little on the soggy side with a spongier texture compared to what McDonald’s offers. It comes down to preference on whether you want something spicier and a softer texture.

As for the regular McNuggets, the texture isn’t as sturdy or crunchy. As someone who loves heat, the Spicy Chicken McNuggets don’t necessarily do it for me, so I’d probably stick with the regular McNuggets. One of the kids at home actually enjoyed the Spicy Chicken McNuggets so like all food it comes down to your own personal opinion.

Regardless, they are here in Wichita if you want to give this new fast food creation a try.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
