Revisiting one of Wichita’s most thoughtful restaurants: Kelly’s Family Diner

It was time for another daddy/daughter breakfast date. Throughout these dates, I’ve been trying to teach her the lesson of generosity and paying it forward.

With that, we decided to revisit Kelly’s Family Diner. I really believe they are one of the most thoughtful restaurants in Wichita. What they do in the community often gets overlooked by many of the more prominent names in Wichita in more affluent areas of town with closer connections to the media and various city organizations. Allow me to do their bragging. They sponsor many events like the upcoming Wichita Toy Run. They have donated so much free food over the years to families in need, people affected by COVID-19, Thanksgiving dinners to people who weren’t able to get one and so much more. Most importantly, it all comes off very genuine. That’s the type of kindness I’m always up to support.

On my most recent visit, my daughter and I split a hamburger steak and eggs meal with a side of biscuits and gravy.

I wish I took a picture of it without the onions on top. It’s probably been 15 years since I last ordered a hamburger steak in a restaurant. Last time was further north on the Broadway at a restaurant called Doc’s Steakhouse. The hamburger steak was a big thick slab of beef prepared just right. The hash browns were made just how I like them with a crispy layer. My daughter was a huge fan of the scrambled eggs. I know this because if it wasn’t the case, she’d be spitting them out onto the ground.

The biscuits and gravy were exquisite; arguably one of the best in town. It consisted of soft and fluffy biscuits covered in creamy delicious gravy with many chunks of sausage. That was probably our favorite part of the meal.

It was another great daddy/daughter breakfast date. Our service was fantastic as always. Not only was the staff awesome, so were the customers. Nearly every customer that walked in gave my daughter a hello. What does she do instead? Bury her face into my arms.

First lesson, generosity. The next lesson? Saying hello and thank you.

Thanks again to Kelly’s Family Diner for all they do in the community.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
