One of my favorite dishes that I haven’t seen at too many places is Carne en su Jugo. If you’ve never had it, the dish is hugely popular in Jalisco, Mexico. Carne en su Jugo translates to “meat in its juice”. It is a concentrated flavorful broth of beef meat finely diced and served with beans plus a wide array of toppings served alongside.
I’ve had it before at Taqueria Altena and loved it. I received word that it was also available at Taqueria La Chona which also happens to be one of my favorite restaurants around town. With this news, I made my way there immediately to give it a try.

The dish cost $10.99. It’s description on the menu was as follows:
Bistec and bacon pan cooked untils its juices are released, then simmered in garlic, onion and cilantro flavored water. It’s topped with whole beans and grilled Mexican green onions and a side of cilantro, onions, diced radish and corn tortillas.
I placed my order and had it in front of me in about 10 minutes.

It was a rich and flavorful dish. I was expecting a pretty vibrant broth but it was toned down quite a bit with all the meats and beans. There was definitely no shortage of protein to be had in each bite which offered a bit of a thick and grainy texture. It’s definitely one of the more unique dishes out there that isn’t discussed much.
For those looking to try something new, this certainly fits the criteria.
Here’s the rest of their menu:
Happy Dining,
