January has been a big month for the little Vietnamese restaurant out west, Grandma Thuy’s. While many people associate them with simply egg rolls, they are hoping to break the mold and show the city more of what they can do.
Last year, they introduced wings. This month they have taken the wings to a whole new level. On top of that, they have also finally introduced fried rice to the menu.

I popped in this week to finally get my hands on both new items and was more than satisfied with everything I received.
Their new “Signature Wings” are different from their regular wings. They have lightly breaded compared to the regular wings and have an extra level of crispness to them. The wings are drizzled and coated with an extra layer of sweet chili sauce and can be ordered extra spicy if needed.
When it comes to the wings game in town, Vietnamese restaurants are often overlooked. Grandma Thuy’s wings were thick and meaty. They offered a light crispy skin with plenty of meat underneath. While I typically order a dozen wings from most places, eating six here felt like twelve. I loved the sweet chili as its one of my favorite sauces there.
Also brand new to Grandma Thuy’s this month was fried rice. We had their combo which included pork, beef, chicken and shrimp. The heaping pile was big enough to be shared between three people. It was just good old-fashioned Vietnamese fried rice that wasn’t so reliant on pounds of butter to bring the flavor. It was rich, heavy and easily filling.
I loved the new additions at Grandma Thuy’s which was definitely one of the new bright spots of 2020. I was happy to see them continue to innovate and bring new things to the table.
