First look at the south side Church’s Chicken

When Church’s Chicken returned to Wichita a couple of years ago at 13th and Oliver, the lines were ridiculously long. Traffic was wrapped around the building and went even further. It was quite the sight to see. Talk of more Church’s Chickens opening in Wichita came up and here we are in 2021 with the second location at 3824 E. Harry St.

When we stopped by the new location, the lines weren’t as crazy as the first location’s opening. We were probably the fourth car in line. After browsing through the menu, we went with their “Feed 4 for $15.99” family value meal which came with 10pc legs and thighs. There were two options of chicken available, spicy and original so we had them split it half-and-half. The meal came with two large classic sides and we chose mashed potatoes & gravy and baked mac & cheese. Then we ordered three honey butter biscuits.

It did not take long to get our order. They were on top of everything and moving cars along with speed in the drive-thru.

The honey butter biscuits were a good start as were the sides. For fast food mashed potatoes, they weren’t half bad especially if you’re a fan of brown gravy. The baked mac & cheese was extremely cheesy which I’m told was a good thing.

The chicken had a mixed reaction. Church’s Chicken went really heavy on the batter which made for an overly crispy skin that was nearly rock hard. Crispy can be a good thing until it’s not really crispy but just hard as hell. Which was unfortunate because the chicken was pretty decent. There was a noticeable amount of heat that stood out even more than my last visit to Church’s. The heat wasn’t on par with Popeye’s but it was certainly there. The original, on the other hand, wasn’t all that memorable. The skin wasn’t good and the meat underneath was a little underwhelming.

My entire experience was via their drive-thru so I can only speak to the speed of the service along with receiving the correct order. Everybody has their preference on fast food chicken and for me, Popeye’s is still above Church’s.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
