First look at Taters n Toppings: A food truck dedicated to all things potato

A new food truck has opened in Wichita and they are dedicated to all things potato. Taters n Toppings offers diners more than one way to eat a potato. For them, any time is tater time. I stopped by their grand opening event to check it out and get a first-hand look for all of you.

For this visit, I was joined by Jeremy a.k.a. Fert the Foodie as we stood out in 40 degree weather to enjoy some food truck goodness.

Their menu offers four different tater options: baked potato, french fries, tater tots and sweet potato fries. You can then select a topping for your tater which includes such items like pulled pork, sausage gravy, pork green chile, and even cinnamon sugar & marshmallow cream. After that, you can take it to another level with two extras such as bacon bits, sliced jalapeños, diced onions, shredded cheese and more.

We went with all four tater options. Here’s a look:

Sweet Potato Fries with cinnamon sugar & marshmallow cream
Baked Potato with spicy pulled pork, sour cream and bacon bits
Tater Tots with sausage gravy, shredded cheese and chives
French Fries with chili con carne, shredded cheese and whipped butter

The pictures really didn’t do the size of the meals justice. Some people may gawk at the $8 pricing, but one entrée was more than enough food for one person. Each container was packed with so much potato goodness and they didn’t skimp on the toppings and extras.

One entrée would have been more than enough for me but fortunately, I had Fert to rely on to help finish the meals.

Taters all come down to personal preference. For me, I love tater tots. They did a great job in making sure they were fried just right to offer a nice crispy exterior with a soft interior. Of all the toppings, my favorites came down to a tie between the sausage gravy and the pork green chile. I believe Fert shared the same sentiment. The pulled pork was nice but I would recommend having it drizzled with a sauce whether it’s sweet or tangy.

As for the dessert fries, we both weren’t big fans of sweet potato fries in general but the cinnamon sugar and marshmallow cream really elevated everything and completely took away any sweet potato flavor. It really was just like a dessert.

Needless to say I was stuffed after my visit and walked away highly impressed.

I ended up ordering two more meals to take home for family. They even have desserts like homemade rice krispy treats with different flavors. I ended up buying two but gave them away to some kids who were waiting in line.

Be sure to follow them on Facebook to see where they’ll be at next.
