First Look at Las Catrinas Mexican Restaurant

Las Catrinas

One of the newer restaurants to open in Wichita is Las Catrinas Mexican Restaurant. They took over the space that was most recently held by Rancho Nuevo Mexican Restaurant. The restaurant serves a mix of Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican dishes. Here’s our first look.

We stopped by over lunchtime and were the only customers at the time. Complimentary chips and salsa were brought out to our table. It was your basic salsa often found at many Tex-Mex restaurants, but that didn’t prevent us from chowing down on many bowls of salsa.

Since it was a Friday and we were looking for some seafood dishes, we each went with their fish tacos and shrimp tacos. Both items came out relatively quick.

My brother was a big fan of their black beans which had a small hint of heat. The cilantro rice had LOTS of cilantro going on; it was a pretty overwhelming kick of cilantro in each bite.

From there, we both enjoyed our tacos. The shrimp tacos had big sauteed shrimp that were glazed with garlic butter and tequila and smothered in Monterrey cheese. The glaze was delicious and really enhanced the flavor of the plump pieces of shrimp. My brother was also a fan of the fish tacos noting how filling each one was.

The service was fantastic throughout our visit. The only issue I am concerned about is if their menu and food sticks out for diners in the long run. Their location has had a long run of restaurants, many of them being Mexican. I’m not certain if its location being tucked away in the back off Maize, if its other Mexican restaurants within a few miles from there, or diners wanting something different for the reason of the constant turnover. If I did, I could make a lot of money as a restaurant consultant. Until then, I’ll sit back, let others read the reviews, try it and see what they think.

Here’s the menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy

  1. In an update – they have increased the menu choices and the food was fabulous. We are new to Wichita – coming from SW KS where there is a large amount of great Mexican food. We have fallen in love with this place and will definitely be eating there quite a bit.
