Taqueria Altena Revisited After New Ownership Takes Over

I’ve been to this place multiple times over the years, but recently found out they were under new ownership. Taqueria Altena is the little forgotten Mexican restaurant located in southwest Wichita. I wanted to revisit them, see if anything had changed and give some love to one of the smaller places in town that often gets overlooked.

A few changes I noticed with the new Taqueria Altena.

  • They now have a phone number!
  • They have a Facebook page they post to with updates.
  • Their hours have changed.
  • They now accepted credit cards!

And the most significant change for me….

  • They took Carne En Su Jugo off the menu. It was probably my favorite place in town for it and unfortunately, it’s gone.

On my visit to Taqueria Altena, I was feeling tacos and went with two tripas, two pastor and one pork bistek taco. I asked for the tripas tacos to be grilled crispy and they nailed it. It was crunchy, still maintained that traditional tripa flavor and was delicious.

Each taco came in two tortillas and were heavily stuffed with as much meat, onion, cilantro and cabbage as they could fit in. Even though the tripas tacos were my favorite, I thoroughly enjoyed the pastor or pork bistek tacos. They were tender, flavorful, well-seasoned and filling.

With stuffed tacos, my favorite thing to do is grab a spoon and eat all the remnants that fell out. I’ll drench it all in salsa and eat away like its dessert.

My tacos came with a complimentary side of chips and salsa; just basic chips and salsa to fill you up right before your meal.

The staff was VERY pleasant and helpful. My server did a great job of making sure all customers were taken care of. She was friendly with everyone who walked in. You could get the vibe that we wanted what’s best for any customer.

This is definitely a place to add to your bucket list of taco travels.

Happy Dining,
