Spear’s Restaurant and Pie Shop Revisited

Thursday is free pie day at Spears Restaurant and Pie Shop. I decided to drive by to see what kind of business that brought, and boy was I surprised. The parking lot was full, and the restaurant was packed inside. There was no shortage of customers inside. Judging from the crowd, this was something I just had to check out.

For those who have never been to Spear’s, they are your classic hearty American, breakfast, lunch and dinner spot serving many old-fashioned comfort dishes along with housemade pies which they are probably most popular for.

When I frequent these types of restaurants, I’m always drawn to their daily specials. For Thursday, they had a chicken noodle casserole. Nothing says being at home during a chilly, windy fall day like chicken noodle anything. I opted to go with that and a side of green beans and mashed potatoes and brown gravy.

The food came out quick. The green beans were pretty standard; no complaints, though. The mashed potatoes were also standard, but brown gravy can make anything standard, special. It was a good side, but then again I’m so partial towards brown gravy.

As for the chicken noodle casserole, it was your typical diner food dish. There was a heaping amount in the bowl it arrived in. The dish was a little bland, as the sauce didn’t seem to have much flavor to it. I doused it with lots of black pepper, which helped a little. I appreciated just how much food was there, but that was the best part about it; tons of chicken and lots of noodles to go around.

Since it was Free Pie Thursdays, I was given any pie of my choice. The seasonal selection had pumpkin listed, which sounded great. I had a fresh slice brought out to me. It might sound odd to some, but the crust is my favorite part about a pie. Unfortunately, Spear’s was lacking with a sliver thin crust, but the rest of the pie was good. It was about as pumpkin pie as you could get.

As noted earlier, the restaurant was packed. Probably the best part about my visit to Spear’s was the service. The staff was hustling and busting their tails to accommodate every single diner that walked through their doors. And trust me, there were a lot of them. Free Pie Thursday brought in big crowds.

Here’s the menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy

  1. I have had the chicken and noodles…I don’t know if they were having an off day…when this person visited…but the chicken and noodles I had were delicious…did you see those big hunky noodles, and the just right amount of thickening with chunky pieces of chicken…makes my mouth water just thinking about the dish, and I have never had a bad piece of pie there either👍👍👍👍👍
