I ate the plant-based KFC Beyond Fried Chicken so you don’t have to

Kentucky Fried Chicken (or as most people call it now, KFC) has brought back their Beyond Fried Chicken nuggets, a plant-based alternative to the original KFC fried chicken. The nuggets are sold in six or 12 pieces. This was originally a test run product in Atlanta in 2019. Fast-forward two years, and now Wichita is beyond lucky to have them….or are they? Let’s find out.

I stopped by KFC and picked up six nuggets. They came in a box and felt heavier than a six-piece nuggets from any other fast food restaurant. Now, plant-based foods aren’t necessarily my thing, but I’ve always been open to trying anything, such as the Impossible Whopper from Burger King.

Let me get straight to the point, these were horrible. Other members of my family tried it and shared the same sentiment. I’ve had many friends in the military tell me that MREs are pretty disgusting. Part of me wants to invite them to try the Beyond Fried Chicken nuggets to compare the two.

The nuggets were rectangular and pretty hefty. It had a high amount of density and resistance in each bite. They were so thick, gritty and dense, I had to make sure I wasn’t eating one of my daughter’s toys. Upon further inspection, I was able to confirm it was actual food….just awful food.

I’ve had other products before and they’ve done a decent to great job of replicating the taste of meat or chicken. Beyond Fried Chicken failed in that aspect. It’s hard to describe the taste….almost like a mix of chalk, dirt, tofu, plants, who knows what else. I wanted so bad to get the taste out of my mouth. Brushing my teeth didn’t help, and I came close to eating my daughter’s soiled diapers out of desperation.

Needless to say, I won’t be going back anytime soon to try the Beyond Fried Chicken from KFC.
