Our two-year-old has a new favorite book she loves to have read to her before bedtime, The Pout-Pout Fish. This is the first book in the New York Times bestselling Pout-Pout Fish series from Deborah Diesen and illustrator Dan Hanna.
It was given to our daughter as a gift and was forgotten about on her bookshelf. But on one fateful evening when we asked her to grab a book, she pulled out The Pout-Pout Fish and all is history. She hasn’t turned back and loves having us read to her the 34 pages of adventure, fun and life lessons. Each night, we swim along with the pout-pout fish as he discovers that being glum and spreading “dreary-wearies” isn’t really his destiny.
My favorite two aspects about the book are that it’s up to par with my reading level which is advertised at Baby – 4 years of age and the language is English; otherwise I’d struggle a bit with reading the book to her.
On nearly every page, there’s an area where the pout-pout-fish will say “Blub, Bluuub, Bluuuuub” and it just fascinates our little one. She loves following along, and the pictures and design are perfect in bringing to life the whole story.
It’s now a nightly tradition that she’ll ask for pout-pout fish before bed. She grabs the book, walks over to the recliner, and asks one of her parents to sit next to her. I’m pretty sure I have the book memorized by now.
And like any parent who unnecessarily spoils their children, I went online to see what kind of other books in the series were available. A seller on eBay had a huge lot of books in the Pout-Pout series, so I quickly hit the “Buy It Now” button and have more books to read home.
Two new favorites now include The Pout-Pout Fish Halloween Faces and Smile, Pout-Pout Fish.
