Revisiting Sakana Japanese Cuisine in Andover, KS

There’s a healthy amount of sushi options all over Wichita and even in the surrounding area like Andover and Haysville. One such option just outside of Wichita is Sakana Japanese Cuisine. They opened back in 2016 and I’ve only been a few times when they first opened and figured now was a good a time as ever to revisit the restaurant years later.

I dropped by for a lunch meeting where we each had a sushi and sushi & sashimi lunch combo. It was basically a chef’s special, where the chef made the call on what type of sashimi was served. Our lunch started off with some small bowls of miso soup and a simple lettuce salad with ginger dressing. Nothing too special here, but they were good little starts to our meal.

Not long after, our lunch combos arrived. We didn’t get all crazy and order and special rolls. What we had was about as basic as you could get. The sushi was nothing to rave about. It was appetizing and tasted about as good as it looked. When it comes to simple rolls as seen below, I feel they are all about the same anywhere you go.

The big difference for places comes in the quality of their sashimi and special rolls. Unfortunately, we didn’t go that route. As for the sashimi, everything was thinly sliced pieces of fish that was satisfying but nothing too memorable.

Let’s put it this way, Sakana wasn’t bad. It’s just that there are so many better options, in my opinion, if you’re in Wichita. If I lived in Andover, I’d probably drop by out of convenience. Perhaps things may be better if I return and order some special rolls….. we’ll see.
