Looking for some Cajun-style crawfish? Check out Gar Joe’s Crawfish

Gar Joe's Crawfish

One of my favorite pop-ups is back for another year. Gar Joe’s Crawfish sells live and cooked crawifsh and shrimp by the pound. It’s essentially big boils in parking lots around the city. They offer a traditional Louisiana Cajun-style boil. No frills, no layers of sauced doused over the top, just good classic crawfish that many people have been clamoring for.

They have had pop-ups in Rose Hill, KS along with such places as Froggy’s Liquor and Westway Marketplace in Wichita.

They were at Pawnee and Seneca one Saturday afternoon and I dropped by to pick up three pounds worth. It was $9 a pound, and for fun, I picked up a single piece of sausage, which was so worth it. In hindsight, I should have picked up more of the sausage.

Gar Joe’s had big crawfish that had me eating and eating and eating. I literally couldn’t stop. There just aren’t many places in Wichita to get a more traditional-style, similar to something you’d find in someone’s backyard in Louisiana. It was basic, yet executed to perfection. Don’t get me wrong, I love the other styles out there that let you pick the sauce and everything, but Gar Joe’s always hits the spot. It’s simple and delicious with a minor bit of heat.

After knocking out three pounds by myself, I sat back in my chair and took a moment to appreciate everything I just inhaled.

If you love a good local family-owned business, I highly recommend Gar Joe’s Crawfish. They do it right and offer very competitive prices to what else you’d find in town, which is hard to do considering all the inflation the industry has seen.
