What’s one restaurant you’ve been going to for decades? For me, it’s Southeast Carryout. Living on the south side of town for many years, they were always a staple for me. Even when I’d move around, I’d still make a point to return to get their burgers. Let’s revisit them.

On nearly every visit, I typically get the 1/3 lb. double cheeseburger deluxe with fries and a drink. But this time, I went a different route and ordered their Big Kahuna burger. It features Southeast Carryout’s spicy Kahuna sauce, grilled pineapple, lettuce, black pepper, spam, tomato and bacon.
Throughout life, I learned only two good things come out of a brown paper bag… a 40 and a good greasy burger. Southeast Carryout offers just that; the burger that is. A 40 can be found down the street at a nearby liquor store blocks away.
There’s something about their fries that gets me every time. They aren’t anything to write home about. Perhaps it’s nostalgia, but the thick somewhat flimsy fries doused in salt really speak to my taste buds.
And the burger? It was great. While it wasn’t all that spicy, I loved the flavor and small kick of heat that the Kahuna sauce provided. The spam, pineapple, burger patty and all the fixings came together well to make for an excellent lunchtime outing.
The one thing about Southeast Carryout is they seem to be forgotten about. With so many new burger places opening every year in more traveled areas of town, this place moves down peoples lists. I’m not here trying to say they’re one of Wichita’s top 5 burgers, but they are certainly one of the burgers worth trying again if you haven’t been in a while.
