After 45 years, Richard Barrett retires after selling The Little Dairy Queen

The Little Dairy Queen Richard Barrett

After 45 excellent years, Richard Barrett is retiring from Dairy Queen. The owner of The Little Dairy Queen at 849 S. Poplar sold his store and will now get to enjoy the next chapter of his life.

The new owners, who also own the Dairy Queen in Hutchinson, KS, officially took over this week where they will keep things running the same until the season ends. Once they reopen next year, I was told there will be some upgrades.

Until then, it is goodbye for Barrett, who has been a favorite in Wichita.

I had the chance to meet Barrett earlier this year and he was such a cool gentleman to speak with. He’s a true staple and legend in our local food scene. You could tell how appreciated he is, just by the sheer number of people who sent cards in to celebrate his 90th birthday last year.

@wichitabyeb One of the coolest people you’ll ever meet is Richard Barrett who is 90 years young and been with @Dairy Queen for 45 years. He’s owned a location in Wichita for 35 years and been making the best blizzards on the side of the Mississippi. #vlog #fyp #Wichita #dairyqueen #foodies ♬ Adore – Instrumental – GC

  1. The new owner has made changes.mr Barrett sold Dilly bars 6 for 12$ and if you bought a extra box he charged 6$ the new owner doesn’t do that so I purchased my final box two days ago😢 I’m retiring from this dq to it’s not the same anymore I always had 6 boxes a week for years time for something new.
