First Look at Mellard’s Mug Shots

Mellard's Mug Shots

It’s not a party until the cops show up“. That’s the motto at the newest watering hole in Wichita called Mellard’s Mug Shots at 3837 S. Seneca in the former Seneca St. Bar & Grill space.

Mug Shots, for short, has only been open for a couple of weeks. It’s probably been 10 years since I last stepped into this building. Many renovations were made inside.

I dropped by over lunch and the first thing I asked my server was, “What’s popular?”. Wings and the cheeseburger were the first two responses I received, so I went with both.

She recommended the Kickin’ Bourbon sauce on the wings, and I obliged. When they came out, she, along with another gentleman working that day, made me aware that the wings I received were not their regular wings. They sold out of their wings and had to rush order a different kind. To be honest, I didn’t have an issue. The sauce was great; sweet with a tiny kick towards the tail end. In every bite, I got some of the fried, crispy breading, and a chunk of meat. It was a good balance and the sauce was just the cherry on top.

Since they aren’t the regular wings, it’s hard telling if what others receive on future visits will be the same. But on this particular outing, I definitely enjoyed them.

Next up, the burgers and fries came out. The fries were thick, well-seasoned, and quite tasty. While they didn’t offer much of the crispiness as I generally prefer, they were still satisfying.  Unfortunately, the cheeseburger was the most underwhelming part of my visit. I like a greasy, thick, juicy burger and found this one to be dry and not providing much flavor. The gentleman who came out earlier, asked again what I thought of everything and that was precisely what I told him. He informed me, they were still toying with things in the kitchen and hope to improve on the burger.

The service was outstanding. They made sure to check on patrons multiple times. I liked how they were receptive and asked for the feedback; especially this early as they try to get the kinks out.

If you love games like pool, darts and cornhole, they have all that set up inside. There’s also a small patio outside. Bar hoppers and diver lovers may want to check this one out.
