A new donut shop called Crispy Donuts opened this month. This one took over the former Taco Tico building at 460 N. West St.
I live in a family of donut lovers. The moment news came out about this one, I dragged myself out of the house at 6 a.m. to beat the early morning rush and make sure there was a full selection of donuts upon my arrival.

If you frequented the old Taco Tico, the color scheme was still the same, they added some donut decor inside, kids seating and a foosball table.
Crispy Donuts offers a mix of donuts, croissants, sandwiches, coffee, and smoothies.
6 a.m. was the perfect time as the shelves were fully stocked. For that reason, I had my pick of the litter.
I saw they had cronuts available and picked up a regular, a cinnamon & sugar, and a strawberry & creme filled one. After that, I selected an assortment of other ones including a glaze (always gotta go with an original), an old-fashioned, then a chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting and a sprinkles donut for the kids. Our youngest has become quite the donut hole aficionado so I grabbed a dozen of those.
The croissants were calling my name and I went with a jalapeno, ham, and cheese one.
When I arrived home, my breakfast started with the croissant, which was fantastic. It was warm, soft, and filled with a thick heaping of ham. This isn’t something I often order for whatever reason, and Crispy Donuts made me rethink that life choice.
My daughter scarfed down the sugary donuts holes, just in time before I dropped her off at daycare all loaded up with sugar.
How about those donuts?
The regular donuts were all delicious. I was a big fan of the glaze; the classics can never be beat. I know what some of you may be asking, What about the cronuts? The cronuts, which have been popularized in town because of Donut Palace, are a mix of a croissant and a donut.
At Crispy Donuts, we loved the flavor. But the big difference at Crispy was the texture. Theirs were almost too crunchy, as if they were slightly dried out. Versus Donut Palace, which had a crispy yet fluffy mix in each bite. If Crispy Donuts could get theirs to be not as crispy, even though that’s what their name is, I think they would have been much better.
But that’s all personal preference and you may enjoy it more.
Lastly, sweet tooth lovers will LOVE the flavor of the strawberry cronuts. For that matter, they’ll probably love the cinnamon & sugar one too.
If you have been traveling around town for donuts, definitely add Crispy Donuts to your list.
On top of everything mentioned, the staff was polite, friendly and never made me feel rushed when choosing donuts. They had a great energy to them, which is saying something for 6am!
Here’s their menu:
