I’ve long said that one of the most underrated Mexican restaurants in town is Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant. Located at the southeast corner of Central and Tyler, they offer made-from-scratch cuisine. I remember when they first opened, the owner was big on making sure to offer high-quality food in a casual setting. It’s one of the restaurants I try to make a point to go out of my way for and on this latest visit, I noticed they even had a newer menu out.

Complimentary salsa, chips and beans were provided as usual. I’m not a huge bean fan, but the bean dip here was truly amazing and something everybody couldn’t get enough of.
One of the best ceviches on this side of the sun can be found at Puerto Vallarta. I made sure to order it as it has been something I’ve done one very visit. The fresh shrimp had such a vibrant flavor. It was mixed with serrano peppers, onions and cucumber and topped with avocado and a splash of agua chile sauce. It was easily one of the best in town. So good that we’ve ordered it to go as our meals on other occasions.
For dinner, I wanted something I haven’t had there. The chicken mole caught my eye. It was a 10oz. chicken breast covered in a traditional mole sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. It was served with rice, beans and tortillas.
This was one of those instances where the meal was probably ten times better than it looked. It was two thinly cut chicken breast slices topped with a mole sauce that was sweet yet salty. At first glance, I thought it was two McRib patties but alas, it wasn’t. This was a much lighter dish than I thought it’d be. The thinly cut chicken breast made for smaller bites, which was probably for the better as I wasn’t stuffed and bloated after lunch. It was a well-balanced meal with just the right portion sizes of beans and rice presented beautifully.
As always, the staff was fantastic and made my lunch outing another success. I just love everything about Puerto Vallarta.
Here’s their menu:
