Reader’s Grab Bag – 09/02/11

Occasionally I get e-mails from other people telling me their restaurant experiences, some good, some bad. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising but that also depends on what that opinion is.

I thought I’d share some opinions I’ve received some people. Of course I will leave out their names but here’s a small sample I’ve received. If you would ever like to share your thoughts, anonymously of course, just shoot us an e-mail at wichitabyeb@gmail.com

Anchor
Ever since they changed things up, the place has been worse. The menu is not as good as it used to be and the service is horrible. I’ve added this place to my list of places to avoid.

Sumo
Why does it take me forever to be seated here. Everytime I go here, I see people get seated well before me even if they arrive after me. The owner isn’t even friendly about it when I approach her.

Po Boy Pizza
The sauce was by far the weirdest “pizza sauce” I have ever had. You could tell they really put a lot of time into it but it wasn’t Italian like pizza sauce. Didn’t really like it actually. It was like salsa. They didn’t use much of it on the pizza at all so it was still good, really cheesy. But the Pizza Roll is amazing. No Sauce on it, served on the side for dipping. Anyway, just thought I’d let you know, that you need to try the Pizza Roll!!!

Hana Cafe
The place is reasonably priced across the board (drinks, sushi) and neither of us felt like we were in Wichita… maybe because it’s a unique, modern spot that we’ve never been. Two Thumbs up!

That’s all for now. If you too would like to get your opinions in, just send them our way to wichitabyeb@gmail.com – All opinions will be kept anonymously. Also if you have any questions, feel free to throw them my my way. Maybe we’ll have a grab bag of e-mails or sorts one day.

Otherwise enjoy your Labor Day Weekend. I’m sure all the bars in Wichita are salivating at the thought of College Football returning this weekend and NFL football the next. They can just hear those cash registers ringing in their heads like slot machines at a casino.

Happy Dining all. Stay safe and hydrated!

  1. Totally agree with both the Sumo and Hana Cafe comments. That's a big reason my wife and I don't go back to Sumo anymore.

  2. I am completely NOT happy with the new Anchor menu. I can see paring it down a bit, since it was a large menu, but they took off almost everything I loved which is why I went there in the first place. Instead of being known for their food, now it's just another bar.

  3. I'm on the fence about the Anchor. I WANT to love that place – they are hip and cool and have bike racks! But it's true their menu change-up removed a lot of favorites; a lot of vegetarian items.

Now when I go there I get chips and queso or sweet potato fries and a "side salad" – the "side salad" is actually the best value in the joint but not listed on their menu. It's $1.89 and full of veggies, you have to ask for it off the menu.

Their service is getting better, but is still marginal at best. Plus they are not open Sundays or Mondays, huh?? Still a lot of work to do and lots of potential to un-tap.
