Delano Barbeque Company |
Where is good barbecue in Wichita? It’s a common question asked by many people who not only visit Wichita but live in Wichita. Admittedly I have not been to every BBQ joint in Wichita so I have to preface that to everybody who has asked me that I’m not the biggest connoisseur of BBQ in town so my opinion may not be the most valid. Well in most instances in life, my opinions aren’t the most valid but that’s neither here nor there.
I’m all for trying new places out as are some of my colleagues so there a group of us were able to visit a long heard about establishment in town for some Wichita Barbeque.
Delano Barbeque Company
They are located at 710 W Douglas right in the middle of the Delano district. Hours of operation are Monday – Wednesday 11 am – 2:30 pm and Thursday – Saturday 11 am – 8 pm. If you plan on going during the week just be aware they are only open for lunch time from Monday thru Wednesday.
You can check out Delano’s menu on their website: http://www.delanobbq.com/
At Delano all orders are taken by the cashier, then you seat yourself and wait for your name to be called to pick up your food. It’s a very seamless process. The afternoon we went, we just barely beat the rush. The line just to order food was nearly out the door. That was a good sign we could be in for some good food.
On our visit, the five of us all ordered either a 2 or 3 meat dinner. The meat options offered are pulled pork, turkey breast, ham, chicken breast, hot links or smoky joe (chopped brisket) similar to a Sloppy Joe but with chopped brisket. Although not on the menu, Burnt Ends were also offered on the day we went in. (Note: Burnt Ends are offered on Friday and Saturday while supplies last).
Three sauce options are also offered at each table: All-American Host Sauce, Hawg Sauce and Mild BBQ Sauce. Nearly everybody avoided using the sauces so I gave each one a try separately just to get a good sense of how they all tasted. By far my favorite was the Hot Sauce. It had a very nice bite to it and possibly some of the best Hot BBQ sauce I’ve had around town. I love all things spicy so it was a nice condiment to the lunch.
Everybody noted the food came out very quickly and in very good size portions sure to fill anybody up.
Two of the favorite meat options by the group were the Burnt Ends and the Smoky Joe.
The Burnt Ends nearly melted in your mouth with a decent smokey flavor. I was also told they were fantastic and full of flavor. Most people who had them called it their favorite. The Smoky Joe was just as advertised. Imagine Sloppy but with Brisket cooked in a delicious BBQ sauce.
The Turkey was thought of differently especially when compared to the other meat options. One person thought it was just a little too dry. Although it had a decent flavor to them, it just wasn’t to their liking. My other meal was the pulled pork which was fantastic. It wasn’t overly smokey or dry; just good tender meat.
The Pasta Salad was pretty good. While I wouldn’t call it the best, I enjoyed it. It was more of the drier pasta salads I’ve had. What was nice about it was the fact that it wasn’t coated in Italian dressing or covered in Olives. The fries, I was told, could have been more crisp which is a personal preference of course. They are a little soggier than you find at most places. The beans were good but nothing outstanding by any means. One colleague had the spicy Cole Slaw and he noted it had too much sauce.
The overall opinion by the group was (and I was given this on a school grading system by them) was in the range of B+ to an A. My personal opinion was I thoroughly enjoyed the place. I would certainly go again anytime.
One colleague just loved the comfortable casual atmosphere of Delano. As I was told by another colleague, the ambiance was on target.
Between a group of five guys going to lunch, we marked this one down as a winner.
Ever near downtown and looking for some good BBQ? Give Delano a try and add it to your list of good BBQ in town.
Happy Dining,
Eddy

The last few times we have been the the food was mediocre at the best. There are better places for BBQ in town. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best I would give them a 6.5.
