Krispy’s Fried Chicken and Seafood Review

There are certain areas in town people rarely ever drive to because of the neighborhood or the stigma that area has behind it. Well if you’re a foodie or simply like good food, it’s time to let that go. Hop on Hillside and head as far South as you can 3009 S Hillside St and get to Krispy’s Fried Chicken and Seafood.

Once there you’ll see a small little building with limited seating. On my visit there, the place was packed. I was quite amazed at how busy they were and the short little line forming for carryout.

Krispy’s specializes in all things fried. Consider it soul food, the kind of soul food that’s good for your heart…….figuratively speaking of course.

Their menu has chicken fried steak, gizzards, chicken tenders, fried chicken, fried catfish, fried shrimp, fried okra, french fries…….literally so much fried food. Naming everything off would be like the scene in Forrest Gump when Bubba was naming off all the shrimp options he envisioned; only in this instance it’s fried food not shrimp.

On my visit, I went with the Chicken & Waffles with the 3 tenders. It only made sense to go with that option. I have heard from others that’s one of their specialties. My friend went with the 2 piece Catfish meal. Then we shared a small order of Chicken Gizzards. We figured if we are going to eat unhealthy, we might as well go all out.

For as busy as they were, the food order didn’t take that long. The front of the restaurant was essentially a two man operation and I wasn’t sure how many people were in the back cooking. Service was friendly and quick. Plus they take credit cards unlike other dive restaurants you may go to.

Yummmmmmm

The Chicken & Waffles, to steal a quote from my friend, were divine. The waffle was a little crisp around the edges and light and fluffy in the middle. Krispy’s uses their own homemade batter and the whole waffle experience alone was ten times better than what could be found at Denny’s, IHOP or Waffle House. Drizzle on some syrup and you have yourself a masterpiece.

The chicken tenders on top just added to the deliciousness of the menu. The tenders came out fresh and still smoking hot. If you’ve never had Chicken & Waffles before, try it out. It’s a great mix of flavors that play off each other perfectly.

Catfish

My friend had the two large piece catfish meal which came with a salad, a roll, and fries.

We were fortunate that at the time we went there they were so busy that the catfish was made fresh. It looked as if they had some catfish out earlier when we arrived but those were all taken up by previous orders so we had to wait a little longer for ours which was ok.

The fried catfish was fantastic as well. The breading on the catfish was not overdone. Sometimes you run in to the situation where you’re eating all breading. That is not the case with Krispy’s. It was lightly breaded and the catfish was flavorful and didn’t smell fishy at all. There was just the right amount of salt on there.

The rest of the meal was alright. The fries were nothing too special and with the amount of salad you get, there’s not much to write about there.

Last up was the Chicken Gizzards. Now neither of us really eat Gizzards. I think the last time I had them was when I used to frequent Stroud’s when I was in college. The Gizzards at Krispy’s were a little chewy but still had a really good flavor to them. Mix the gizzards in with some hot sauce and they were even better.

Overall Krispy’s Fried Chicken and Seafood was a winner in our books and well worth the drive down south. They are open daily from 11 am to 8 pm but closed on Sundays so get your fix in on the weekdays or a Saturday.

There aren’t too many local restaurants that serve out fantastic soul food, fortunately there’s Krispy’s.

Happy Dining,
Eddy

  1. My husband and I have gone to Krispy's several times for the fried chicken alone. We found this place on a fluke when making a wrong turn looking for the new QT and thought we would give it a try and it was SOOOO GOOD! Another thing to try are the corn nuggets lawd lawd they are delish! Thanks for the review 🙂

  2. I'm an avid eater, I love food for the most part, I enjoy places outside the fast food theme. I will say, if you liked Grandys chicken, or Popeyes, this should rank right up there. They informed me they filet their oil daily, really? That's the stuff you can taste. I've had both dark and white chicken, chicken tenders, and the fried ice cream. If i could budget this, it would be a weekly thing. I've given up KFC, Church's, Popeyes and Dillons (is pretty good if it's fresh). Give it a try, you might enjoy it.

  3. This place is so good!! I've had everything from the chicken to the desserts and i cannot get enough. The specialty items like the stuffed crab and calamari reignited my love for seafood and man, are the prices affordable. If you had not ate there yet, YOU NEED TO!
