One of my friend’s has this rule at restaurants. Never order a burrito at a bar and grill; never order fish at a steak restaurant; never order steak at a Mexican restaurant.
I also have a rule at a restaurant. Order whatever you want that sounds good. So chicken at a burger restaurant? Why not!
So that brings us to Dempsey’s Burger Pub. We have reviewed them before and they are certainly one of the favorite burger joints at Wichita By E.B.
Once Wednesday a month, they have been serving Nashville Hot Chicken. Every one of those times, I have been unable to make it so I made it a point to block my calendar for dinner the next day it came up.
Nashville Hot Chicken can be hard to come by in Wichita. KFC has it at their restaurant but it can be very greasy. I was fortunate enough to attend the Nashville Hot Chicken Festival in Nashville this summer. It was my chance to try some of the best Hot Chicken from all around the country with some friends on one really hot summer day. Since then, I’ve always had a craving for it. When done right, it can be an excellent foodie experience.
Dempsey’s Burger Pub has their version of Nashville Hot Chicken and as stated earlier, it’s done once a month. The best way to find out when they are doing it next is to follow them on their Facebook page.
Their Nashville Hot Chicken runs $12 + tax. It comes with three pieces of chicken, three pickle slices, a piece of bread and your choice of Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad or Homemade Mac and Cheese. You can also order it Hot or Hot Hot.
My brother and I made a to go order. He went with the Nashville Hot Chicken with Homemade Mac and Cheese while I went with the Hot Hot version with Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad.
Take a look at this glorious meal:
Let’s start off with the sides. My brother just loved the mac side. He felt it had that home style feel and appeal to it; worthy of being called Homemade Mac and Cheese. Tasted good and a proper amount of cheese to pasta ratio. The Spicy Asian Cucumber Slaw was indeed spicy. It was the type of spicy you don’t notice until after a few bites and then it all hits you at once. It was the good type of spicy though. The one where there’s flavor and just isn’t spicy for the sake of being spicy to burn your taste buds. Great start so far for Dempsey’s. Then it was on to the main course.
The first thing we noticed is the sauce wasn’t drizzled all over the chicken. It wasn’t greasy by any means either. All the flavor and spices was caked on and into the chicken. The portion size was great. I was actually full after eating 2 of the 3 pieces of chicken.
Nashville Hot Chicken was very mild. If you’re worried about spicy foods, fear not. If you want some spice, go with the Hot Hot. That’s what I had and it’s very bearable. Most of the spice is in the seasoning but it’s not overbearing by any means.
There was a fine amount of crisp to the skin but once you got inside, there was some juicy succulent chicken to be found. It was not dry…..at…..all which we found surprising in a good way. Very moist and delicious. The flavor was excellent; Dempsey’s did a wonderful job of seasoning it all.
After having gone to the Nashville Hot Chicken Festival, I can attest this was right up there with some of the best ones I had.
For the flavor and the food portion, it was something we’d order again.
On top of burgers, there’s another thing that Dempsey’s does right and it’s Nashville Hot Chicken. Definitely be on the lookout the next time it’s on their menu. I’ll be placing my carryout order again.
Happy Dining!
