El Pollo Dorado: An east side option for dollar tacos

Street taco options on the east side are rather limited if you’re looking east of Broadway and north of Kellogg. There just aren’t that many compared to other parts of town. Options get more scarce if you’re looking for dollar street tacos.

Well we have a spot for you. It’s called El Pollo Dorado. You may be familiar with that name as they also have a wonderful food truck on west 21st street. Earlier this year, they opened a brick and mortar at Central and Grove in the former Antojitos Salvadoreno.

Their menu consists of grilled chicken, ribs, burritos, wings, and tacos. Don’t be fooled by the menu. For the longest time, their restaurant has been running a dollar special on tacos according to their Facebook. I have stopped by El Pollo Dorado’s new restaurant multiple times and have never paid $1.50 per taco as their menu states; it’s always been a dollar.

They only have three meat options for tacos: carne asada, al pastor and chicken. I’ve had all three and my favorite of them all is the carne asada; great smoky flavor to them.

A dollar will get you a basic single tortilla street taco with just the basics which is the best way to go for any taco. With each taco, you also get their award winning salsa from the 2017 Chimps and Salsas event that took place at the Sedgwick County Zoo this summer.

I also tried the carne asada fries which were fantastic and more than filling and worth the $6.49 price tag.

Chicken is on the menu and something I’m going to need to try soon.

The service there is always fast and friendly. The only drawback was the building is extremely cold. I’m not sure they have a working heater. I opted to eat inside recently and my fingers about froze off by the time I was done. On the bright side my stomach was happy so it was a win in my book.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
