Rolled ice cream has come full circle in Wichita. With options downtown and the east side of Wichita, the fun has made its way to the west end of town.
At the southwest corner of 21st and Maize sits Freezing Roll.

8 Below Rolled Ice Cream brought the trend to Wichita and you can check that first look here to get an idea of what it is. Long story short, rolled ice cream is ice cream made on a pan that’s set at eight degrees below zero. They then roll the ice cream into egg roll shaped treats and cover it with whatever topping you’d like.
Freezing Roll brings the exact same concept to the west Wichita. One of the biggest differences between Freezing Roll and 8 Below downtown is it’s completely indoors. There’s an east side location of 8 Below that’s also completely indoors for what its worth. Freezing Roll is also five cents more expensive; not really something to get all crazy about.
Outside of that, it’s really the exact same thing from an outsider perspective.
I stopped by recently with my family to give this west side competitor a try. Our experiences were nearly identical with our 8 Below visit.
There are 15 different preset options to choose from or you can create your own. Every now and then they also have seasonal specials.
My family went with a bunch of different options like Mango Tango, Chunky Monkey and Cookie Monster. We actually ran into Denise Neil earlier in the evening at a separate restaurant and she gave us a heads up that they sometimes have Facebook specials. That particular day it was buy one get one free Cookie Monsters so kudos to Denise on that. Be sure to follow them on Facebook to see if they have any deals going on the day you go.
They had plenty of stations available and staff on hand so getting our treats did not take long at all.
Everything was great. The texture was what you’d expect in rolled ice cream. Of course the kids loved the little show put on by the staff making the rolled ice cream. They even spell out the kids name in syrup while making it which really excited them. It made me a little jealous as I wish something that simple would get me excited.
Six dollars seems to be the price point set in Wichita for rolled ice cream so that’s something to be aware of when you go in. It’s not exactly a trip families will make often but it’s worth it every now and then.
If you’ve been to any other rolled ice cream place, don’t expect much of a difference. Regardless everybody enjoyed the visit to Freezing Roll and would recommend it to anybody looking to get their fill of sweets in. Move over frozen yogurt, rolled ice cream is taking over! How long this fad can stay around still remains to be seen.
Happy Dining,
Eddy
