For a quick impromptu birthday dinner before checking out the Derby escape room, Puzzle Plex, we stopped by El Maguey Mexican Restaurant which opened in Derby in 2016.

El Maguey describes themselves as a mix between authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex. It’s decor is similar as to what you’ll find in an El Agave or Playa Azul. One takeaway I did have is the place is nearly spotless inside; they did a great job of keeping the place clean which was a plus.
Some people may be familiar with El Maguey as there are two locations in Winfield and Ark City.
We were given complimentary chips and salsa upon our arrival and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The salsa had a strong onion and tomato flavor to it which we’ve found to be pretty common at many Tex-Mex restaurants which was fine for us. We had no problem finishing many mini-bowls of salsa.
For dinner, the group of us ordered a variety of different items off of the menu like enchiladas, chimichangas, salads and burritos. Unfortunately I arrived a little late so was unable to snap pictures of everybody’s meals. Here’s a sampling of what we had:
While we don’t necessarily frequent Tex-Mex restaurants often, we all seemed to really enjoy El Maguey’s take on Mexican food. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. Sometimes on chimichangas, they come out overcooked or simply too hard. That wasn’t the case at El Maguey.
The service was polite, friendly and attentive. Prices were great and the food was much better than we anticipated. Overall it was a great random outing for a birthday stop that we all enjoyed. El Maguey ended up being a nice pull for Derby.
Happy Dining,
Eddy
