
At the recommendation of one of my old college professors, we made a stop to Anahuac Tortilleria Restaurant. So many things are made fresh on site like the chips and the tortillas. Located on south Seneca, you’ll want to go earlier in the day because they close at 6pm on most days.

Upon arrival, you’re given some complimentary chips and salsa which was all made on site. We really loved the chips and the flavorful spicy salsa had a nice kick to it. It was the type of bite that grew and grew and grew until you realized your mouth was on fire. Still I couldn’t stop eating it. For chips and salsa, it ranks up there as some of the best in town.
For lunch, we ordered the tamales with two tacos (one guisado de chile verde and one lengua) and the gordita platter with chicken.
We each had rice with our dishes and it was amazing. There was some sort of seasoning on the rice we couldn’t make out but it really brought the rice to a whole new level of deliciousness. Another thing you’ll love about Anahuac is the tortilla. The homemade tortillas has a noticeable difference in texture and quality. They could have really stole the show if the meat was comparable. The chicken inside the gorditas was beyond dry and was in dire need of salsa to salvage them. The tamales also had an odd flavor that threw me off. So odd, I didn’t finish them. It was almost as if it had a soapy taste to it. Meanwhile the tacos were average. The chips and salsa, sides, and tortillas were all phenomenal but when it came to the guts of the food, we were less than impressed.
The lady serving us that day was very friendly throughout lunch. The restaurant definitely had some cleanliness issues to it. The prices were great. But in the end, we were more ‘meh’ about the place than ‘yeah’.
