Inside the Flying Eagle Truck Stop at 3405 S West St. is a La Cocina Mexican Kitchen. They are only open in the mornings and early afternoon. Even though they are located inside a gas station, I stopped by to give it an honest shot and to see if it was the next hidden gem in town.

Here’s their menu:
With a plethora of options like tacos, tamales, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, and gorditas, I wanted to keep my visit simple. I just went with a few tacos. There are only a few meat options like beef, pork and chicken. To be completely honest, none of it looked too appealing. But who knows, they could be excellent.
I had a couple pork tacos and one beef taco along with their green salsa. Once your order is ready, you pay for your food with the main gas station cashier.
Many people are probably thinking gas station tacos will taste like gas station quality food. Well that was the case here. The pork and beef were pretty bland. I was hoping the salsa would provide some flavor but there wasn’t any kick to it. That too was a little flavorless. The tortillas though did a great job of holding everything in tact; that was probably the best part of the taco.
On the south side of town, $2.50 per taco is about fifty cents higher than the average of what you’ll pay for a taco. I could see people getting food here strictly out of convenience. Gas, lottery tickets, Mexican food……… but I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way just for the food.
Happy Dining,
Eddy
