When it comes to the discussion of “Best Hole in the Walls”, there’s one restaurant that is always in the discussion: Fried Rice.
Locally owned, cash only, great prices, not off of a major street, barely any seating, and a menu written by hand, they have the best Hole in the Wall qualities anyone would look for. On top of that, the food is great.

We’ve covered Fried Rice before many years ago but it’s time to bring them back to light. They are located in a little strip just a block south of Pawnee. If you’re driving in the area of Pawnee and Oliver, you can get a glimpse of it but it’s certainly off of the beaten path.
The menu at Fried Rice is very simple. For $4 cash, you get a 16 oz. container of fried rice, two egg rolls and 1 pop. Your choices are chicken or pork. For 50 cents more, you can get shrimp.
The pop you get to choose from is the ever popular Big K brand. Did you expect a big name brand? Come on! It’s a hole in the wall!
Of the three options, my favorite is pork but I’ve had the chicken and the shrimp plenty of times. For $4, it really is an excellent value for what you get. The fried rice is slightly greasy but still delicious with plenty of meat in each 16 ounce container. The eggrolls are fairly basic but I’ll let you be the judge of that as I’m not the biggest eggroll fan. I go there strictly for the fried rice and my Big K pop.
Depending on how busy they are, you may want to know your order ahead of time. The owners can be friendly but have no problems rushing you if you don’t know what you want. The first time I ever went in, it was intimidating but learned that’s just how they are and I had to accept it. On my most recent visit, they were much more engaging and friendly.
So round up four dollars, drive on down to south Wichita and get yourself one of the best meal deals in town.
