It’s a recommendation I get asked quite a bit, “Where do I go for a good Chinese buffet?”. Then it dawned on me, out of the 1,000+ articles I don’t think I’ve ever written a review on a Chinese buffet. I have two to recommend and the first one I’m going to cover is Shanghai. It’s probably the first Chinese buffet I can ever remember going to.

First here is the pricing at Shanghai:
Soon I’ll take you on a magical visual tour of what you can find on the buffet line. Before all that, why is it worth it?
This used to be a ritual for my family when we all lived around the south side of town. It was a big deal to stop by here after church in our Sunday best (and I say the word best loosely). We didn’t dine out too much growing up but when we did this was one of the handful of places I could remember going to (along with Grandy’s, Hometown Buffet and Godfather’s). Back then it was relatively cheap to eat at Shanghai and years later, it still is with a sub $10 pricepoint.
At Shanghai you won’t find the deepest selection of dishes that many places offer. What they do have, they keep it warm, consistent and rarely empty. The staff does such a great job of refilling every tray when it comes close to empty. Service is one area Shanghai excels at. Of course when you step into a buffet, the quality sometimes is different than a stand alone sit down Chinese restaurant. But for a buffet, it’s one of the best in town. When it comes to any sort of Asian cuisine, I trust my mother’s instinct. After all, that’s all she was raised on. Later in her life, she would raise us kids on Shanghai and it was one place I never once threw a fit about going to. Even now, I try to stop in once every six months or so to get my fill.
