Have you ever had teques, a Venezuelan treat with a twist?

The Green Place

There’s a new restaurant in Towne East Mall that offers something a little different than your typical mall food. Now open in the mall is The Green Place. They aim to offer healthy foods like poke, smoothies, and detox juices. But something they have that they hope to set them apart are teques.

The Green Place is located upstairs in the old Beard Papa’s space. While they have other items on the menu, I went there specifically for teques. It’s a twist on the Venezuelan treat called tequeños which are fried breaded cheese sticks or a spears of bread dough with queso blanco in the middle.

Teques are just like tequeños except they are baked. They are then served with a green sauce made with cilantro, green onion, pepper, mayo, mustard, parsley, and avocado.

The employee there was really selling them hard to me. He went as far as to say that if I didn’t like them, he would refund my entire purchase. I liked his energy and gave in.

After the first bite, I would admit that the sauce was delicious. I loved how not one ingredient stuck out but mixed well together. You could tell it was made with cilantro, mayo, mustard, avocado but only after he told me. As a big fan of condiments, I would have purchased a jar of it had it been available. Regarding the teques, they were good. The texture was soft and fluffy with minimal cheese inside but not so minute that it would upset people. They were easy to bite into and reminded me of a breaded mozzarella stick that wasn’t fried. It sat well and made for a nice easy appetizer.

The biggest gripe about the teques was the price tag of $6.95 for four. They are small and run about two inches in length. I would probably spend $4 for four and find that even a bit high for what I would consider a light appetizer.

Maybe one day I’ll head back and try the poke, salads and smoothies. If you’re into trying new things that can’t be found elsewhere in Wichita, perhaps the teques are worth it at least one time to see.

Here’s their menu:
