When you start to travel more to the east side of Wichita, the number of Mexican restaurants really begin to tail off. You’re more prone to find Tex-Mex or places like Taco Bell. You start to go east of Webb and that number significantly drops. Fortunately there’s El Gordo Mexican Fast Food. Due to its close proximity to many members of my family, it’s been a popular stop. So why not pop out a review for you to read?

The menu at El Gordo is similar to many of the small mom and pop shops you find at the south or north end of town. The only difference is, El Gordo closes at 10pm everyday except for Sunday. They are not open 24 hours a day. If you want Mexican food that late in that area of town, your closest bet is to pick up a microwave big bomb burrito for $1.99 at QuikTrip at that corner. Just be careful cause your stomach will suffer afterwards.
Enough of that though. We’ve had nearly everything at El Gordo. We’ve tried their tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tortas, and tostadas. They even have one of those salsa buffet lines with multiple different options. Their spicy guacamole salsa is my favorite.

To help you decide what to order, we will focus on the good and the bad. Having traveled all over the city, the tacos weren’t in the same league as some of the best. It had mostly to do with their tough taco tortilla. There’s a nice balance of being light and soft but with a durability to keep the taco in tact. El Gordo’s is more on the harder end. The price of $2.50 is a bit higher but about a quarter but we can blame the area of town for the price increase. Rent is probably much higher there than a north Broadway location. Their tortas were not anything special either. It takes a lot to really impress us with a torta and they didn’t meet those expectations.
When it comes to our visits to El Gordo, we stick to one thing: the burritos. The pricing was extremely fair at $5.95. For those six Washingtons, you get a big burrito that puts QuikTrip’s to shame and so worth it. We’ve had the breakfast burritos, the regular lunch burritos, the smothered burritos and every time they were filling, delicious and just what we needed. Also props to the rice. I loved it!
Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve had in the past.
The service here has always been quick and friendly. Cleanliness has never been an issue for us. That’s a big key driving factor in us coming back. It’s well kept, always accommodating and affordable.
