First look at Las Islas Marias: Wichita’s newest Mexican seafood restaurant

Las Islas Marias

There’s a new mariscos in Wichita. With one already in Kansas City, this is the owner’s second location for Las Islas Marias. They are a Mexican seafood restaurant that is in the former Neighbor’s space near 21st and Amidon.

The colorful interior commonly found at other Mexican restaurants was also very spacious with plenty of seating. The menu was massive with many popular seafood dishes and traditional Mexican entrees. Beer and liquor were also available. You can find pictures of the menu at the end of this blog.

Every diner was treated to complimentary ceviche and tostadas which made for an excellent starter. For a single diner, it could really fill you up.

For lunch, I ordered mejillones al sazon casero which was mussels cooked in their spicy house seasoning. This was an appetizer that I would order again. I love mussels but to have them with a bit of heat made them even more enjoyable.

To complete my first visit to Las Islas Marias, I ordered a fish taco and their tostada mixta which included fish, ceviche, surimi, octopus and shrimp. While the fish taco left a little to be desired, the tostada was excellent. Any seafood lover should give this a try. All of the fish tasted fresh with my only sticking point being the discoloration of the avocado. Aside from that one small issue, you all should give the tostada a try.

The prices were very comparable to many other mariscos in Wichita. They also accept cards which is rare at a majority of the competitors. Right now the biggest issue that Las Islas Marias has to work on is service. After being seated there was a long wait just to get service. This despite seeing many of the servers notice my presence. While observing everyone, the manager and only one server seemed to do a good job. Everyone else was too busy socializing with each other. I sat there for a long time with an empty drink and was finally asked for a refill near the end of my meal.

Food was delicious, prices were fair but service will need to improve at Las Islas Marias. I certainly intend to make a return visit as there were so many different menu items I wanted to try.
