The new Mexican restaurants keep on coming. The latest to open in Wichita is Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant. They are located in the former Pedro’s Express and Charlie’s Pizza Taco space. Unlike the most recent tenant, Puerto Vallarta strays away from the “Mexican fast food” found at many late night options in the area. The owner focused on made-from-scratch cuisines and hopes to allure diners with higher quality authentic Mexican food.

The full-service sit down restaurant had their grand opening earlier this week. I made a quick stop to check it out. The two-page menu kept it very simple with appetizers and feature dishes. Many of the dishes ranged around $9-16.
All diners were given complimentary chips and salsa along with beans. The chips were light, crispy with a slight amount of grease on them. They came out fresh and did a great job scooping up both the salsa and beans. I really enjoyed both options and soon found both bowls empty in a matter of minutes.
For my quick lunch stop, I ordered the smothered shrimp and crab burrito at the recommendation of my server.
I received so many apologies for how long it took for my food but to be honest it wasn’t bad at all. The wait didn’t strike me as being too long. Regardless it was nice to know they still cared to make sure everything was perfect on day one.
Not long after my food arrived and it looked very appetizing. What looked good, tasted even better. Inside the burrito there were good-sized chunks of shrimp and crab inside. Portion-size was not an issue here. I can’t recall the last time I’ve had a Mexican seafood burrito but I was very impressed with Puerto Vallarta. The crab cream sauce smothered over the top was simply amazing. It really elevated the entire dish and gave it a nice zesty bite.
My first visit to Puerto Vallarta was a positive one. I ran into some others I knew who gave it a try as well and left impressed. This is certainly one restaurant I’ll be going back to for a deeper dive. For those going out for their first time, I’d love to read what you think in the comments below.
Here’s their menu:
Happy Dining,

I stopped in yesterday on a whim and I was so glad I did! I agree with your take on it. The chips, salsa, and beans were all great. My chicken tacos were over the top delicious. Twenty-four hours later I am still thinking about them. Unlike many other places, the tacos were packed with meat and two of them turned out to be enough to have me leave stuffed. Well, of course I had ample amounts of chips, salsa, beans, etc. 🙂 And the Mexican rice was really good, too. I plan to promote them because I want them to stay around for a very long time!
Oh! And your line about this not being “fast food” is spot on. This is excellent quality and I plan to return again and again.
I did work for them, which they didn’t pay me for and continue to use. The food may be good, but I wouldn’t give my money to people who have have the decency to honor their word.
This is my favorite place in town now to get tacos. The carnitas street tacos are absolutely mouth-watering good. I add a squeeze of the lime wedge provided and a drizzle of the hot sauce (also provided), and it is one of my favorite meals in town. The meal comes with 4 (I get the Taquiza on the menu with all 4 carnitas), and 2 leave me stuffed. I have had the remaining 2 as leftovers and they are just as delicious the next day. If you return, please please please order the carnitas street tacos, they will not disappoint! Not to mention, amazing service every time I have been, whether it is inside, or just picking up my call-in order at the window. I hope this plays stays forever.
