Since 1953, Ty’s Diner has stood the test of time. Their burgers available only during lunch is one of the oldest restaurants in Wichita. There’s a reason why they’ve been around for so long….. it’s simply because they serve a damn good burger.

Ty’s Diner is highly regarded and judged by some as the best burger in town. In nearly any debate of the best, Ty’s is always in the discussion.
Inside the place has dive appeal. It’s not a fast food restaurant as the sign says on the front or an overpriced gourmet burger joint. It’s not a hipster spot or a huge family friend place with play areas. Ty’s is no frills and all about the food.
When you go in, you’ll hear a common cast of regulars that chat with the staff. It’s people who have probably been going there for decades. My girlfriend hasn’t been there in years and has fond memories of going there as a teenager with her parents. For myself, I haven’t been back to Ty’s in probably 3-4 years so we made it a point to return.
While glancing through the menu, I decided to go with some chili as a starter. Despite there being beans (which is a big debate among chili-heads), it was delicious. It was thick, flavorful and had a nice tomatoey aftertaste that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s known I’m not a fan of beans in my chili but the ratio of beans to meat was relatively low which was more in tune with my preference. Definitely get some chili on your next visit there.
And no visit to Ty’s would be complete without some burgers and fries. My girlfriend went with the cheeseburger while I stuck with a regular hamburger.
They are slightly different here than some of your other favorites like Bomber Burger or Bill’s Charcoal Grill. At Ty’s they serve a thin 4 ounce patty in a butter toasted bun with onion, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes and mustard. It’s a traditional burger cooked to perfection. We both finished our burgers with ease and cherished every second of it.
The fries are hand peeled and cut fresh everyday. They are my girlfriend’s absolute favorite type of fries. She may have had more of the 1/2 basket than I had but then again, she’s eating for two. And I’m probably in the doghouse now for writing that.
What I love about these locally owned mom and pop style of establishments is the friendliness. That’s not to say they are all like that but Ty’s Diner certainly is. The timeliness was spot on, our drinks were never empty and everyone there had a smile on their face. For any place to be a Wichita tradition and still open since the 50’s is a testament to the hard work and great product they put out. Kudos to Ty’s Diner for being around all these years; truly one of the best.
And after writing all that, I just realized I forgot to order a root beer float which was on my gameplan. I was so stuffed, I had completely forgotten. Guess that gives me a reason to return sooner than later now.
Here’s their menu:
Happy Dining,
