Dollar Taco Tuesdays at El Papa Pollo Restaurant

Last year Papa Gallo Mexican Restaurant moved from 901 E Harry to 25th & Arkansas in the Plaza Mexico strip center at the northwest corner. They since rebranded themselves as El Papa Pollo. It’s a restaurant that has been very popular for their grilled chickens but on Tuesday they also have dollar tacos. We stopped in to give them a try and see how they fared because that area has become a hotbed for tacos with Mr. Taco at the southwest corner and Taqueria El Fogon at the northeast corner.

You can find El Papa Pollo at the west end of the little market.

All of their street tacos were a dollar on our visit. They had steak, marinated pork, shredded beef, carnitas and chicken. If street tacos aren’t your thing, they also have the Americanized hard shell or bigger soft shell options at regular price with chicken, ground beef, carnitas or shredded beef. We opted for the former and had a little bit of everything.

There was no question in our minds that the marinated pork was by far the best. We loved the sweet and slightly smoky flavor of the marinade, it really gave the tacos that delicious pop. While I wasn’t too high on the chicken, some friends really enjoyed it after dousing it in their signature green salsa. The other favorite was the carnitas. One friend said she loved how tender it was.

For your standard street taco meats, everyone really seemed to enjoy them. They didn’t have anything off the wall like tripas, lengua or buche like the others at that intersection. But for those wanting something cheap, quick, and good, these would really hit the spot for you. It’s “safe” in terms for people who are scared to try different meats so give this one a try.
