Los Pinos Mexican Restaurant Revisited

In the Delano District, there’s one little Mexican restaurant that doesn’t quite get the love as some of their other neighbors. It’s Los Pinos Mexican Restaurant. We stopped by to revisit and get a little Taco Tuesday love at this locally owned Mexican spot.

Los Pinos serves your typical Mexican fare of tacos, burritos, enchiladas along with some American staples like hamburgers. Since our last review, the prices have gone up somewhat minimally. Their tacos used to be $1.90 but are now $1.95-$2.25; nothing too extravagant.

All diners were given complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was your basic house salsa that was full of onion and garlic. It was one of those salsas where the taste seemed to linger in your mouth the entire day. The huge problem though was the chips. They were very chewy and were not crisp at all. Not sure what happened but that was the first time they have ever been that way for me.

Since it was Tuesday, I felt obligated to go with tacos. Meat options included pork, beef, tripitas, barbacoa, loganiza (chorizo) and al pastor. Unfortunately they were out of pork and loganiza that afternoon so I went with the tripitas, beef and al pastor. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive and they came with a red and green hot salsa.

While Los Pinos didn’t blow me away with all of their tacos, their tripe tacos were some of the best I’ve had all over town. They were grilled to a nice crisp while maintaining a little chewy tenderness on the interior. On previous visits, the loganiza has been amazing but with none to be had I was left with the beef and al pastor. The al pastor and beef had a very similar taste. While I wouldn’t put it on the same level as some of the popular little street taco restaurants in town, they were still both satisfying. Beef was a little on the mushy side but not so bad that it deterred me.

The service at Los Pinos was very good. All customers were taken care of in regards to getting their food on time and drinks refilled. That has never been an issue on any visit. I don’t usually give letter grades to reviews but I would give Los Pinos a solid B.
