Ramen has picked up steam over the years in Wichita. There are a good handful of places you can find this dish at. Even using the trusty Food Directory, you can sort out the sub-type by ramen.
Blue Fin Sake Bar & Sushi is another place downtown you can find this meal. The sushi there’s really good, even better when compared to the other downtown options. Given their good track record since new ownership took over, I swung by over lunch to check it out.
Their menu has two different types you can order. Japanese traditional ramen served with bean sprouts, green onion, sweet corn, egg, shredded seaweed and chatsu for $9.95. Or the Korean Spicy Ramen served with vegetables and egg for $7.95.
I went with the Japanese traditional ramen on my visit. I should have just ordered both. The serving time was quick, my bowl was out in no time.
I’ll just shoot it straight. The broth didn’t do much for me. It was like a miso based broth or at least it tasted like it. While I don’t mind miso, it still left a lot to the imagination. The egg on top was cold and felt as if it was still thawing. I’ve never had an egg in my ramen was felt like it had been sitting in the freezer for a few minutes. The chatsu though was very flavorful and had a good fatty taste that I enjoyed. That was easily the best part of the meal. The noodles were fine, a little on the soggy side, but filling.
Overall it wasn’t a bowl of ramen I’d order again. Perhaps I’d try the Korean spicy ramen next time or stick to sushi. For what I had, Yokohama Ramen Joint and Sakura Japanese Cuisine the nod. No complaints about the service though at Blue Fin.
