This weekend, Derby had their Smoke on the Plains Derby BBQ & Music Fest. Some buddies wanted to go stop by as they had a friend who was participating in the cook off.
We went on Saturday. The afternoon featured the KCBS (Kansas City BBQ Society) Cook-off, the Backyard BBQ Cook-off, a People’s Choice Contest, food trucks and the Derby Noon Lions Club Beer Garden. There were inflatables, concerts, rides and all sorts of fun things to do. I was VERY impressed with how nicely laid out the event was at High Park.
We spent our time at the People’s Choice Contest. It was $5 for a tasting kit. I loved how it was organized. Underneath a big tent, volunteers served little cups of pulled pork. It was ran exactly how a People’s Choice Contest should be….. blind taste test.
Each area was numbered. The tasting kit included a little frisbee you could put your little cups of pulled pork on.
There were 30 contestants and we tried them all. Each cup was small but started to add up as you ate each one. The sun was also beating down that afternoon so mix that in with a ton of pulled pork and it was the true definition of meat sweats.
Tasting kits included a little poker chip you could drop in the box of your favorite pulled pork. I ended up voting on booth #30 but didn’t stay to find out if they won.
Otherwise it was a very cool event. I loved how they ran and organized it. Friends told me Friday night was even better with the weather and such event as the cornhole tournament. Kudos to Derby on this one. I’ll be back next year.
Happy Dining,
Eddy
