Is Sonic’s new slush with Carolina Reaper peppers the hottest and coolest drink in town?

Last year Sonic put out their pickle juice slush. This year they are trying to up the ante with their new Reaper Spicy Margarita which has Carolina Reaper peppers blended into it. It’s their hottest concoction put into a cold slush.

So you have the world’s hottest pepper inside of a slush? Of course I was right there to give it a try when I first heard it was available in Wichita. For those keeping track, the pepper stands at an average of 1.641 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). A jalapeño is anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville units.

We grabbed a small just in case it was too hot.

I took a small sip for safe measure. At first it was really sweet like a margarita mix with a slight Mountain Dew flavor. I didn’t feel much at the start. I then took a much larger sip. The result was much different.

It had that same sweet flavor then it felt like someone jumped in my mouth and punched me in the back of the throat. The heat really came on fast but subsided quickly.

It’s no where near as hot as a Carolina Reaper and for good reason otherwise Sonic would be losing money with this.

I let my girlfriend try it. She took a couple sips. Next thing I know, she’s in a coughing fit. She wasn’t expecting that follow-up shock of heat like I did. But felt the same in the fact that it died down soon after.

The Sonic staffed watched in glee as we tried it. We liked it and enjoyed the sweet and spicy flavor but anything more than a small would have been too much for us. I love spicy foods but my throat could only take so many punches.

I’m interested to see what others think about this new mashup from Sonic.

This new slush is available until August 4.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
